I hope everyone had a great holiday season and enjoying our brand new year. I have been sooooo MIA lately on the sewing scene. I have lost my sewing MOJO somewhere and desperately looking for it. I've been trying to catch up with everyone's sewing blogs and I'm getting some sparks of sewing energy so, I hope I can get that MOJO workin' soon. Maybe I can plan to get some things done during the long weekend of MLK this month and President's day next month. In the mean time I'll be dropping by your blogs for some much needed inspiration!!

(Vogue - 8668) Front

I got a chance to sew a while today...Ya! I'm almost done with the top I've been working on. I just made a couple adjustments. The sleeves are a little shorter than planned but it still looks good. I don't know what happen but they came out really uneven (front piece to back piece). So, I just evened them up making them shorter. Since the fabric is chiffon I wanted to line it without changing the nice drape the fabric has so I lined it with black chiffon which worked out really great.

Chiffon isn't the easiest fabric to work with but I think it all worked out. All I have left to do is hem the bottom and the sleeves and add the buttons.

Next I need to get back to getting some pants done amongst other things. I have a jean style jacket already cut out in a stretch cotton zebra print. Do you see a theme here, LOL! Yes, I like animal print and haven't used any in awhile but have come across these that I really like so I'm going for it. More later...

Keeping my fingers crossed....

OK, as you know from the last post I've been unable to sew because of a roof repair issue going on at my house. It's a long story spanning almost the whole month of Sept. and a few days of Oct. firing one handy man and hiring another....see long story just read between the lines. At last I think it's done, however I won't know for sure until it rains again, but I feel better about the second set of repairmen. We'll see, in fact it's due to rain this week and I truly hope it is in fact DONE.

In the mean time I'm getting into my sewing room this week and hopefully next weekend and get some stuff done. Here is what I was working on before the roof repair fiasco. I'm making View-A which is the yellow version. I really love this animal print I've had in my stash. It's a chiffon so I'm going to line it with a black chiffon just to add a little weight and strength. So I hope to get it done by this weekend.

Not much on the sewing front...

I'm still dealing with repairs around my house. The access to my attic is through my sewing room closet so everything in my sewing room is covered up and pushed to the side until everything is done.What a drag, I thought about pulling my sewing machine out and using it on the dining room table but naah...that won't work for me. This top is what I'm working on from the stuff I cut out back in July. I'd love to get this finished to wear before it turns cold.

So, in the mean time I made a couple more cards for friends that live in other states. This is almost as much fun as sewing, I have a lot to learn but I'm enjoying it and hope to improve with each card.

BTW - my son loved the card I sent him for his birthday. He was so excited that I made it. It's nice to have someone understand and appreciate when you put your time & care into making something for them. Since he is an artist he loves it that I'm into crafts.

So, until I'm back in the sewing room that all for now.

Sorry I've been MIA...

I know I've been missing in action lately. Yes, I've had a couple distractions with my new hobby (card making), I'm still learning and it's tons of fun. I did a little sewing this past week however not much. I've been dealing with some minor home damage due to hurricane Irene...thanks a lot Irene. My roof is in process of repair but fortunately there wasn't really major damage. I'm hoping to get back to my top and other...many other sewing projects I need to finish and start. So, I hope everyone is safe.

Also on the day of remembrance for 9/11/01, I continually pray for those who have lost loved ones in that awful tragedy, as well as so many whose lives have not been the same since. God is with us, so be strong. God Bless America...the greatest county in the world!

A Happy Distraction...

I haven't sewn it a few weeks, I have some things to finish but my sewing mojo is in slow gear. I've been distracted lately by something I've been wanting to do for awhile but held off because I knew it would divert my attention. I'm finally getting into card making and scrapping & it's so exciting. So, today instead of sewing I made my first card. My son's birthday is coming up next Friday and I wanted to get this card made so I could get it to him in time. He lives in LA and he an artist & musician (as hobbies right now), so that's how I came up with the theme. It's pretty elementary but I'm just beginning so here it is...

It's just my first one but I'm excited about continuing this new hobby. I hope he likes it. It was the perfect activity for a day like today, other than sewing that is. Thanks to my scrapping and card making blogger friends KMQ, Sheila & Ki for sharing their beautiful craft creations and also tempting me to get on board.

On the storm front...I hope everyone in the path of hurricane Irene stays safe. In my area it's just been rainy so far with more severe weather forecast for the evening and over night. STAY SAFE!!

I'm not sure why, but I ended up with two copies of this book and I'm sure it would be a welcomed addition for someones reference library. Both books are just like new and no point in having them just setting around in my sewing library if someone else can get good use from them.

More Sewing...

I was glad to get a couple hrs of sewing in this weekend. I made this top to have something new to go with the white skirt from a couple posts back. Ya! This is just a jersey knit and the black binding around the neck & sleeves is bias strips I cut from some light weight poly knit (not sure what to call it) it's not a tricot but reminds me of tricot but it's more stable, has a little stretch and a nice sheen. I plan to make a couple tank/camisole tops just to wear under low cut things. I know, I'm going on about the black trim but it's so nice I wish I could get another 10/yds of it. It's kinda nice to have around. OK, back to the top, I made this top from "Pamela's Patterns" T-shirt pattern. I've been meaning to use this pattern for a while but just now getting around to it. It's a very simple pattern but one of the nicest fitting T-shirt patterns I've tried. I haven't really made a t-shirt in a while and I guess that is the reason. Any I've tried in the past just didn't fit nicely. This one is great without much adjusting.

OK, another thing I'm going to get back to doing is full reviews on the items I make. I haven't posted a review on PatternReview in quite some time. So, I'm going to copy the template and use it on my blog here and on PR as I've seen many of you do, that's such a time saver. I've gotten lazy about some things in an effort to reserve all my free time for sewing. I've got to do better...I know I didn't do it this time but going forward...OK...promise.

Yes, it's true. I've been trying to get my stash whittled down a bit but I just can't seem too. So, the other evening on my way home from work, I just made a casual visit to a local fabric store "G-Street Fabrics". It's pretty convenient to stop on my way home so I just wanted to stop in to see what new stuff was in. I love to visit the $2.97/yd table at the back of the store. So, I strolled into the store Oooing & Awwwing all the way back to my favorite spot...the $2.97 table. There were mounds & mounds of fabric on the table and I often find some real treasures there. So, here's what I got...

I actually did pretty good and didn't go overboard. But, I'll go back again & again. I just can't help myself. I guess I could have much worse addictions but I love this one and I don't want treatment.

Finishing UFO's from my sewcation...

Tonight & tomorrow will be another sewing day..Yeah!! I finished two of the skirt from the pile I made toward the end of my sewcation a couple weeks ago..(see last post at the bottom). I hope to get a couple things knocked out this weekend, hopefully two pair of the cropped pants. So stay tuned I hope to make some progress before the weekend is over. Stay safe & stay cool....

Where did the time go!!

Long post ahead....
I was off work this past week for a well deserved and longed for sewcation. It was so nice to have untethered time all to myself. As Carolyn said when commenting on my last post, it really "calmed and centered" me, it's amazing how you feel when you are doing something you enjoy and not being under stressed or pressured for lack of time. I was able to read, relax and sew to my hearts content. So as promised here are a few pictures, the result of my week...

I finished this dress from my last post. I wore this one to church today and got several nice complements. The fabric is a knit jersey, I lengthened it quite a bit about 5", the pattern was way to short for me. That short stuff is for the little hot young thangs, LOL. I really like this dress and have cut it out again in all black knit. After making this one I wanted to find more knit fabric in more of a summery print. I did go to JoAnn's but really didn't find anything & I didn't feel like running all over town so maybe I shop for something online. My time was to precious and really wanted to spend my time in my sewing room, I can shop anytime.

This next one is from a couple posts back shown on my dress form, as promised these pics are just to show it on me. I mentioned adding a little triangle piece as a modesty panel because I failed to make the neckline high enough. With my full boobies...I really don't need to flaunt my cleavage. I really feel more comfortable with this little piece added. Also on this version vs. the first one I used gathers instead of pleats at the waist, I also like that much better.

Simplicity 2703

This one is the Simplicity 2703
I like the dress except for the fact that it's sleeveless but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. I like the dress overall and might even make it again. I will definitely won't wear it without a jacket but I don't like the jacket in the pattern. So, I'll still have to make a jacket for this before it's wearable for my personal comfort level. I also didn't put the ribbon bands around the waist, that just didn't work for me, but that way it could be belted so I might try that.
Also for better fit in the bust area I added to the width in the neckline but added a couple extra tucks and that worked out really well.

This skirt was super quick & easy...

This fabric panel and I wanted to make it into a dress but that small design at top was off center and I couldn't get it centered on my body and still have enough fabric to go around...(the boobs) so I cut it and made a skirt. I plan to applique the design onto a black top such as the one I'm wearing above. I do want a special top for this skirt so I'll be thinking about what will really look good with it. I forgot to take a picture of the back but the back is exactly the same. I really like this as a skirt. I rarely wear a long skirt like this but it will be ready for whenever I need it. I've been pretty lazy about doing the "PatternReview" posts so maybe I'll get around to getting these reviews on PR soon.
So after all the sewing I cut out several other things so they'll be standing by ready to sew.

I'm trying out this Bruda pattern for a pair of cropped pants. The fabric is an army green stretch cotton.

Also these Butterick cropped pants... one pair light olive green and tan stretch cotton sateen. The blouse is a semi-sheer poly, not sure if it's considered chiffon. I think it will look nice with the tan cropped pants. A couple skirts, I've been needing a white skirt, I'm making this one out of the white pique from my stash and this print that I've had for a really long time. I originally made a jacket from this print. I wear it now and then but I'll never wear these together...just too much of a good thing for me. Finally the famous Tracy Reese dress again in black knit. If I had another week off I could knock these (or most of it) out but I hope to have this all done by the end of the month.

Well back to the weekday grind, guess I should be grateful for a job to go to. That's what makes having this fun possible. That's it for now stay tuned...

This is what I worked on today...

I stayed home today to sew, no celebrating other that celebrating the fact that... I didn't want to do nuttin' but what I wanted to do today and that is just what I did. I also wanted to do something quick and easy just to feel a sense of accomplishment. I've kept it a secret that I'm off work this week because I didn't want certain people to know, but I think I'm safe with letting it out now. So, this week is mine all mine...ha, ha, ha can you hear my laughter!! It's a well deserved sewcation and I'm so excited. I promise to have a review at the end of the week of all I get done including the dresses that I posted about in my last post. I really like this dress and I think I want to make it a couple more times, one being all black. I know this print isn't exactly summery so I want to get something really summery to make it again before this week is out, so I might have to go fabric shopping tomorrow just for something perfect. So, I hope to get lots of sewing done this week & I'll report back later in the week....so more later.

Making some progress...

I got a chance to sew for a couple hours today, Ya! So I worked on the dress mention in my last post.

Simplicity 2177

All left to do is add the zipper & hem it and it's done. I made a couple changes instead of pleating I gathered at the waist and I added a little modesty triangle since the neckline was too low and I didn't pay enough attention to that before cutting. When I held the pattern pieces up to me it didn't seem as low but it ended up a bit low for my comfort. I also ended up adding this little feature to the other dress I made like this one from the last post. I actually I like this dress better. The fabric is a little bit heavier but it still has the lycra stretch. So, I'm going to finish this one up tomorrow and get started on Simplicity 2703 dress also shown in my last post. More later...

YEAAH!! I got a chance to sew this weekend

Last Saturday was the first free Saturday I've had this month and even with that I didn't sew as much as I wanted to but at least I got to sew. I'm working on this dress again out of the fabric on the left.

I've put the bodice together & should get it done this weekend, so more on this one later.

I also cut out this dress, Simplicity 2703 from the fabric below. Sheila @SheilaCrochetz sent me this pattern a while ago and I'm just getting to it. Thanks Sheila!! So more on these later.

Done...but not done!

OK, so here are some pictures of my dress (sorry no make-up). I was going to wear it yesterday but decided not to. When I thought it was done I decided it needs a little more tweaking. Here's what I mean...

I really need to take it in a bit, in the second photo I'm holding the back in about 3" in the waist area and I think it makes enough difference to rip the zipper out and take it up a bit in the back seam. The fabric is a cotton with some lycra, so I think that will work out fine. The jacket...I could really do without, I do like it better open than closed though.

Actually I could take it or leave it. It really needs to be a couple inched longer (in the front). I might make one in another style just because it's just a good summer staple.

So, there you have it. I like the dress and with that one little alteration I think it will be good to go. As for the jacket this one isn't working for me (my fault) being too short, but I make another one and see how that works.

Update... I made the alteration and it looks much better. SO, now it's done! Thanks for your suggestions and comments, you all are great!!

Making Progress

I was able to sew on one of my dresses from the last post this week and tonight. It's almost done, I just need to put in the zipper and hem it. Also I thought it needed a little something...

As you can see here, you really can't see the design detail because of the print. So I thought it needed something to give it a little pick-me-up.

Had I thought about this before serging the seams I might have used piping but instead I'm using grosgrain ribbon (just pinned on for now). What do you think? I'm also going to make the little jacket included in the pattern in a white cotton pique'. I hope to finish the outfit tomorrow and wear it Sunday.

BTW this sizing method I used as described in the last post worked out really great. I did have to take in the side seams and back seam a bit because of adding additional seam allowance but other than that everything came together very well. Next time I need to use this method I'll take pictures and document so I can share with you all. I'll try to get pictures of me in the outfit Sunday so I can post pics wearing my dress. I really like this dress a lot it makes a perfect summer dress. I can't even remember when I last made a dress but I see many more in my future.

EUREKA!

I finally got to spend some much needed time in my sewing room today. I was determined this weekend to try out another pattern sizing method that I'd only read about but had totally forgotten about it until coming across this article the other day about "Pattern Grading (check out this link) on Threadsmagazine.com (I'm really terrible at documenting processes when I'm trying something new so I'll take pictures of the next pattern I try this out on.) As a plus sized girl I have many, many patterns that are not in the size I need but I just buy the largest size available and try to deal with it. I've tried several methods...pivot & slide, adding to the sides & center front & back etc. Usually this resulted in gaping in the neck or arm area, producing something not usable and ended up in the trash or less than acceptable fit which didn't make me feel good about the time I'd spent making the item and I didn't want to wear it. After working with the pattern I decided not to do a muslin. I was happy with the pattern tissue fit, so I hope the results are what I'm looking for. Here's the pattern and fabric I'm working with.

Both of these fabrics are cotton with lycra added so they have a little stretch, perfect for summer. I really need summer dresses, so I'm excited. If this method works well for me I'll be slashing & spreading to my hearts content. Cross your fingers with me and I'll let you know what I come up with.
I'll probably not finish them until next weekend, so I hope to have something to show soon, until them...

I Missed My Own Blogoversary...

I've been so busy with my head & hands in other things lately that I completely forgot about my own blogoversary! At least I'm still in the right month. I started this blog 3 years ago, April 11th, 2008. It's been a great experience mostly because of meeting so many wonderful people in the sewing and craft world. You all have made my life richer and better because of your warm hearts, brilliant minds and creative energy. I've been blessed to meet some of you...like Carolyn, Alethia & Sheila from NJ & NY (this was more thrilling to me than you know) and I hope to get to meet more of you all in the coming months & years through the PatternReview & other Meet-ups. Though I don't get to sew as much as I'd like this keeps my mind thinking & creating until I can actually get in my sewing room and that is a good thing. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog both new and old friends, no matter where you are, you are a treasure to me. So, to celebrate I have a give away...

It's finally done...

My jacket is finally done,

I know it took me long enough, huh? Work and other stuff just keeps getting in the way. Work stress is kind of levelling out now so I hope I'm over the hump there. I still need a dress to wear with this jacket but now I'm not in the mood for dark colors, I need to get moving on the spring & summer sewing. So, I took some time off work to get a head start on the weekend. I'm going to stay in my sewing room until I come up with a plan. So, I'll check in later to share what I've come up with.

Yea! I got to sew today!

I finally got a chance to sew for a while today. I'm almost done with my jacket from the last post below. It's fully lined and all I have to do is hem the bottom & the sleeves add my buttons & buttonholes. I'm trying to decide on the buttons I'll use, these are my choices from my button stash, what do you all think? I'm leaning toward the middle one or the one to the right since it has some blue faded in. Your feedback would be very helpful. Also, last week I finished a lined skirt also from my last post, the fabric I used is on the left, Here's the skirt... Last post, I had posted about using this pattern, I thought I wanted to do the longer one, view C but didn't care for it at all on this current body so I'm sticking to the shorter lengths. I still plan to make the blue & black plaid check (in the picture) above but in a short version. That may have to wait for fall sewing now since spring is just around the corner I think since my sewing time is so limited lately I'd better get busy on sewing for spring & summer. More later...

I'm getting there...

No sewing yet, but at least this weekend I did get to spend some time planning a few projects. First of all I went on a shopping spree without even leaving my house. I had a great time shopping my stash. I decided on a few pieces & pre-washed them and picked out the patterns I'm going to use. Note to self: (get back into the habit of pre-washing my fabric as I bring it home so it's ready to go when I'm ready to sew). Here's what I came up with...

This fabric is a blue/black crinkle type shark-skin poly. I'm making this jacket with the blue/black crinkle & the black piece of poly crepe fabric for the dress, Butterick 5147 Then I re-discovered this OOP (out of print) pattern that I made quite a few years ago I always loved this pattern. I think I'll make three skirts, one long and the other two shorter out of these fabrics. Well that's what I'll be working on, after this I think I look toward Spring sewing.

My Mojo is broken...

Help me!! I just can't seem to get my butt in gear. I'm wanting to sew, even recently bought more fabric but I'm stuck....I've had so many other distractions and work is a bit stressful lately. But I'm going to try to get something going this weekend. Maybe something easy and quick will do the trick. I want jackets & pants the most but heck, I'm in need of just about everything. It's always great to see what all of you are doing, I am always checking out my favorite blogs whether I'm sewing or not. So, keep up the great sewing and crafting you all are always an inspiration.

A little Christmas Sewing

No garment sewing lately, just last week to decided to make some stocking stuffer & gifts to give to a couple co-workers. I found these of someone else' s blog and for the life of me I can't remember who it was. So, if someone else recognizes this and know the blog please let me know so I can give them the proper credit. These were a great last minute project and I was so glad they shared it. I had some Christmas fabric on so it was easy to get started. So these are napkins when folded form a Christmas tree These were quick and easy and fun to make.

First I made a cardboard 1/2 circle template, I made mine about 1 inch larger than the template in the instructions and I'm glad I did... then I folded the fabric in layers and traced the template with white chalk & cut several layers at once. I did mine with print fabric on one side and a solid on the otherThen I serged the edges...some in red, some green and some gold embroidery thread. There are several way to finish the edges but this was the quickest Here's a link to one set of instructions if you would like to add embroidery Christmas Tree Napkins, I also have another PDF of instructions that are a bit simpler (the one I used) without embroidery but I I don't know how to post the PDF. So, if you'd like that set of instructions send me an email. I'm going to make a few more this week and I'll be pretty much set for Christmas.

It's done and I kinda like it...

I'm finally done with this top and I kinda like it now. The only real change I made was to make the borders narrower on the bottom and the sleeve hems. The borders were a bit much before, (see this post). It's pretty amazing but I think it made quite a difference. I actually wore my top out and got lots of compliments.
I wish I'd gotten a picture of me with it on & I'm a bit too lazy to set up the camera right now...sorry. SO, I'm looking though my pattern and fabric stash to see what I'll get into next. I really need to work on some wardrobe separates. I seriously have some basic wardrobe needs and I'll probably sew some Christmas gifts in between. More later...

Not sure about this one...

Remember this fabric from my last post? Well here's the top, it's almost done. All I have to do is the hem on the bottom and the sleeves. Problem however, I'm just not sure I like it...but I'm going to finish it and if nothing else I'll wear it around the house on the weekends. I tried to add some interest by also using the border on the sleeves, and around the neckline

It might be the pattern but it just seems lacking...when it's finished I'll take pictures of it on me, maybe it will grow on me, we'll see.

OH, remember this. I hate UFO's so I'll usually stick with something until it's done or I decide that it's just not working out and I decide it's a wadder. That brings me to this top...from back around Spring time. Well I think I forgot to tell you all it totally became a wadder. Yeah, just had to let it go. It never did fit well so I decided it had to go. I guess "You've Got to Know When to Hold 'Em, Know When to Fold 'Em, Know When to Walk Away, and Know When to Run, as the old country song goes. This was a fold 'em and run. I think I might try it again maybe next spring cause I really like the pattern, next time I'll try a muslin first, novel idea huh.

Finally Done

Well ya'll, the black & white dress is finally done, made from Butterick 5500 that I mentioned in an earlier post. Here it is open with black top & pants underneath. Sorry that this picture is dark around the bottom. It hits me right at knee length. This is it belted as a dress. Not that it took me so long to make it just finding time to sew. I was able to finish it Saturday. I was also able to make this knit top as well since I had it cut out & ready to sew. This one is from Vogue 8580, view D. It was supposed to be a tank top, I wasn't happy with it without sleeves (I don't like sleeveless tops) so I don't even know why I started to make it that way. So I put sleeves on it and made it a plain ol' top. The fabric is a wonderful soft knit, I'm not sure of the content but it feels like a silk jersey. I love the way it turned out. This picture really doesn't do it justice, the color is a lot richer.

Here's another one, almost done, it's also a soft poly knit. This one however is giving me a real workout around the neckline, it's stretching out of shape so it's giving me a fit. SO, we'll see how this one turns out, I'll keep you posted on that one. Yes, I have a black & white theme going. I love black and white, I'm working on building my wardrobe around black, white & red.

Here is one last top that I currently have cut out and ready to sew and I hope to get to it soon. Sew & Sew #5444. I'm using this fabric for this top, yep...it's knit. I guess that my other theme lately. I will be mixing other colors in, I really do love color also but the black, white & red will be my base colors. I need to get some more pants made and start working on jackets too. So, I've got lots to do and so little time but I chuggin' along.

Yet again I was side-tracked by doing some non-clothing sewing. I spent this past week making these cushion covers for a bench in the children's room at my church. I really didn't mind doing it, they were fun and much appreciated. So, now I can get back to my black & white dress from my previous post. I've got part of it together and will probably finish it this week.

Guess What??

I finally finished a couple pairs of pants that I am pretty happy with. They are not perfect but better by far than previous attempts. As you all might remember I'd been trying to get a good fit on pants and let me tell you they gave me a workout. Here's what I came up with, (sorry not the best pictures)Here's a close-up of the fabric, it's a mid-weight polyester with a medium amount of stretch. The black pair is also a polyester suit weight, no stretch but has a really nice drape. for the life of me I couldn't get a picture of the back my camera just couldn't get a focus on these from the back,
I didn't use one of the big 4 to make these, I used a system called; "Fit Nice Sew Slim System" I've had this system for awhile and tried it once before without much success, but decided to give it another shot. I still had a lot of tweaking to do but I think I'll use this as my TNT for pants. I put a waistband on the front but used elastic across the back and that worked out well for me. I used an invisible zipper on the left side. Over all I'm pretty happy with them, I'll have to try them in a variety of fabrics to really say they deserve to be my pant TNT.

I also decided to work on this dress today, Butterick 5500 out of this fabric I bought during my trip to NY with Alethia back in July. Hopefully I'll get to finish this tomorrow or early next week. I also cut out a few knit tops that I'll post pics of and hope to get busy on them this week also.

In The Mean Time...

I have been so busy with family & church engagements lately that I haven't had much time to sew. So, in the mean time I decided to do something for my office at work. I was given the chance to move into a larger office with larger windows. I love the extra space and light.
I've always had this low metal cabinet but with the move I also acquired a large metal file cabinet that I would be facing while at my deskI thought...I've got to do something about this cabinet, it was not a pleasing sight. So, I decided to cover the drawer fronts with upholstery fabric. Mind you I couldn't do anything permanent because they belong to my company. So this is what I did...made a paper template to cut my fabric, turned up 1/2" hem and used "Tacky" glue on magnetic strips to the back and...here's the after
The low cabinet is actually behind me while I'm seated at my desk and with the fabric covered fronts they are much more tolerable.

Hopefully I can get to some sewing this weekend.

I'd been without internet and home phone service for the past three weeks. The last post I did was from work. I was in the process of waiting to switch over to Fios so, I finally got connected today with Verizon FIOS. I really don't know what's been going on but it was driving me nuts ...however I had to wait it out. It's kinda funny I can do without phone service cause of my cell phone but going without internet service drives me crazy...LOL.

I've done a little sewing, to get my sewing fix, I made up this little top, I bought the fabric from Adrienne @ Real Life; Live & Unscripted a few weeks ago, but of course couldn't post about it. I've also been working on my fitting muslin and almost have a bodice sloper just about right so next is to get a pant fitting done again so I can have a pant sloper. Pants have been the hardest for me but I'll be trying again I need them so badly, I need a little of everything so I'd better get busy. It's a bit last to do Summer sewing now, I've had so much distraction lately I just start my Fall planning and sewing and get an earlier start on my Summer sewing next year. More later...

Making Slopers...

I spent some time Saturday making a skirt muslin. Thanks to Alethia taking a full set of measurements for me before I left from my visit with her last week, I finally have accurate measurements some of which are difficult to get on my own. So, I'll be working on a set of slopers. I ordered a fitting pattern, Butterick-B6092While I'm waiting I used a skirt pattern, Butterick-B5466 for the skirt sloper.

I prefer skirts and pants with either facing or a very narrow waist band, so here's my skirt sloper. I'm still deciding which pant pattern I want to use. I've had a real ordeal with pants if you remember from a few posts back...so I'm saving them for last so I don't use up my mojo on pants. I don't want pants with front pleats of side pockets but I want it so the zipper can be back, side or front fly. Fortunately Alethia gave me a few great tips for my pants fitting so maybe this time it will be a better experience. More later...

Whew, talk about laundry day...

I spent today pre-washing loads of fabric. I unexpectedly had most of the day off because of the bad storm that blew through the Maryland/DC area yesterday, the building where I work was without electricity. I drove in to work to find out the good news...wish I had checked before I left my house. Oh well, not a problem I joyfully drove home...YA! (I felt like doing a happy dance) and got busy washing up most of the fabric I bought in NY last week and several other pieces from my stash that had never been done. Between loads, I also started planning how I was going to make up each piece. Here are all the pieces I pre-washed today, some of the pieces are as much as 6/yds long.

Now just a matter of picking patterns and getting some of this fabric sewed up. Stay tuned, more later...

What a BLAST...Part-2

The big day had finally come...NYC FABRIC SHOPPING and meeting up with two of my favorite blogger friends, Carolyn & Sheila. Alethia and I woke up bright & early Friday just beside ourselves with glee. We were anticipating a grand day and let me tell you the day unfolded beautifully. On this day we started out with coffee from one of Alethia's favorite coffee shops then took an express bus into NYC. We stopped in at M&J Trims, this place was just brimming with some of the most beautiful trims & buttons of every kind imaginable. I was so overwhelmed I totally forgot to take pictures but here's a link M&J Trims I didn't buy a thing but believe me I will know where to go online for the perfect unique BLING for a garment. We stopped in at a couple books stores. One was the international bookstore that Carolyn has mentioned on her blog before. They have tons of fashion related books and magazines. I can't remember the name of it but if you are ever looking for it, it's right across the street from the famous "Bryant Park" (made famous on Project Runway), I'm sure someone could direct you there. We also went to a Japanese book store that carries some of the Japanese sewing books & magazines you may have seen on a few blogs, it's also not far from Bryant Park. We stopped in a couple fabric stores as we made our way to "Metro Textiles".

Finally we got there and immediately enjoyed touching and drooling over fabric as we made decisions about which fabric would leave the store with us. We kept Mr. Kashi quite busy and jubilant measuring up our selections. Then suddenly coming through the door was none other than Carolyn. What a pleasure it was to finally get to meet her in person. She couldn't help but notice the piles of fabric Alethia and I had amassed in the short period of time that we'd been there. Just moments later in came Sheila, the four of us just had a ball in that store. Here we are with Mr. Kashi I had my fabric shipped to my work address. I got it today at work and needless to say I couldn't keep my mind on work, I just wanted to go home. I endured the torture of having the fabric in my office and not able to play with it. At 5:30 I flew to my car and quickly but safely drove home. Ok, enough suspense here's what I got...

This gorgeous piece of fine silk crepe, This was the most expensive piece but I had to have it, Ok don't drool...HA! I hesitated on this one for a moment but was strongly encouraged by Carolyn. I would have been a fool to leave this behind, I'd been looking for the perfect orange fabric for a dress and this is defiantly it,To top it off I'll use this piece as a shawl with the the orange silk
This is a piece of silk also, yes, had to have it...
I'm not sure of the content of this fabric but it's enough for a couple pairs of pants and a skirt, The pen is there because my camera needed something to focus on...
Oh, yes and had to have this too, not sure of the content, I think it's a cotton/poly blend, this will be great as a jacket and I might be able to squeeze a skirt out of it too but I won't wear them together, that would be too much on me. This one will be a tunic or maybe a dress, it's a knit jersey,
I love this one...Ok I love them all but can't you see this as a jacket. It's a cotton sateen with a bit of stretch.Not sure of the content on this one but I love polka dots, this is a light weight kind of crepe or something (hard to describe) but this will make a cute top to wear with a white skirt or pants.Whew, that's the damage I did at Metro Textile Fabrics. I simply had a ball and now I've got to recover and get busy planning my projects.

After leaving Metro, Carolyn took us over to "Daytona Braids & Trimmings, she got us settled in and headed back to work. Then Alethia, Sheila & I stopped at another fabric store (couldn't resist) then we headed off to "Juniors" for lunch and spend the rest of our visit together chatting about sewing, fabric, projects & techniques we've tried. After lunch we parted ways and seemingly skipped off to our destinations. I must say from start to finish my trip to NYC was inspiring, exciting and just the spark I needed. We will have to do that again and next time I'll look up all the NJ/NY sewing friends out there that want to join us, the more the merrier.

I will be working on a muslin shell & sloper I think that will also help me with TNT's. Then I will be planning what to do with my new treasure trove of beautiful fabric. No breath holding please, but stay tuned, LOL.

What a BLAST!! Part-1

I'm flying high from my latest NJ/NYC excursion. I returned this past Saturday from visiting with my friend Altehia in NJ. I was her mystery guest...imagine that, LOL! All I can say is we had a blast. I drove up this time so I could haul back my treasure trove of findings. Believe it or not this was our first time meeting and it was like we've known each other for years. Be careful, if you invite me I just might take you up on it, (LOL) and I did just that. It all started with my visit to NYC back in Apri l with my girlfriend from Ohio that visited me in DC. The purpose of that trip was to take her sightseeing in NY and except for our visit to Mood Fabrics I stuck to my promise to show her a good time sightseeing. But I was soooooo wanting to fabric shop, so I patiently waited until, I had a few email exchanges with Alethia and she invited me to come up and spend some time with her. Did I ever jump on that invitation...we worked out the timing and off I went. She invited me into her home & family with open arms and I count is a wonderful blessing to have been in her home and meet her wonderful family. I was treated like royalty, I can't begin to tell you what a pleasure it was.

Well, I got there Weds. night and she laid out all she had planned. At the dinner table we were talking a mile a minute, her husband and son were a bit bored with our conversation so they left us to our own devices (which was probably a mistake, HA!). So, Thurs. morning after breakfast we grabbed our wallets and cameras and off we went, first to the "Brooklyn Museum" for a wonderful display of couture gowns and clothing. Here are a few pictures, but for more click here. WOW! you talk about 'eye candy" we got an eyeful. After that we sped off the the Bronx to visit a couple "off the beaten path" fabric shops and...yes....of course we got fabric, HA! Here's what I got between the two shops we went to, on the bottom underneath the black & white fabric there is 20/yds of muslin...This is just a photo inside one of the fabric stores, "Fordham Jerom Fabrics...Even thought Alethia had prepared part of our dinner the night before her husband completed dinner and had it waiting for us when we got back...is that awesome or what! SO, we talked well into the night until we were just exhausted. Yes, I slept really fast in anticipation for the next day of NYC FABRIC SHOPPING and meeting Carolyn and Sheila at Metro Textiles!!!

I thought I was gon' loose my mind...

I was without internet service for a couple days and it totally drove me NUTS! I'd rather go without many other things but I've got to be able to get online. LOL! I was back up and running today, I tell you I could have hugged the Verizon guy today. He even noticed how I perked up by the time he was done compared to when he got to my house.

On the sewing front...I didn't get any sewing done today, my Mojo is just gone. I'm going to spend some time with a sewing friend later this week and meet up with some other sewing sisters and let their Mojo rub off on me. I'll tell you all about it in my next post. So for now enjoy your week and keep sewing so I have a reason to get online a snoop & peek at what you all are doing. I'm sure I'll be full of inspiration when I post next time.

Once again I have sad news...

There's been another death in the family. Actually my sister-in-law's family. If you remember last year I lost my brother and that has made this past year very difficult. My sister-in-law, the widow of my brother has lost her sister. In my family I didn't have any sisters, only brothers...5 of them. So it has been very special to me that I have been very close to her family and they treat me just like a sister and this makes my heart very heavy. Her dear sister Nanci has had a very long 23 year battle with cancer, she fought long and hard. She passed on her birthday last Thursday, so now she is at peace and no more pain. So, I'm preparing to go to Fla. for her service, please keep the family in your prayers.

Well I decided to work on my top some more to try and save it from the wadder pile. I think maybe I can make it look even better than the original. Here's a couple pics of the fix I had in mind.I plan to also put a black band around the bottom of the sleeves and the hem. I just have it pinned on for now...SO, now lets see if I can put this off for real.

OOOPS!! Should have made muslin....

To do a make a muslin or not to make a muslin...that is the question!?! Well I just want to scream right now for not making a muslin! Since I have multiple fitting issues I should have known better, but nooooo, so now I have a wadder. "Just do it" will be my motto now as far as muslins go if I have any doubt about the outcome. I hate wasting good fabric. Well, this is the project, from my last post.The FBA turned out fine, but it is about 2" shorter then I'd like and it feels like it's going to fall off my shoulders, that just won't work for me. So I need to make the shoulder area wider and taper it down to the regular "V" neckline. I really like this top so I think I will try it again and this time test, test, test. One problem...I need some more pink fabric (I can't remember where I got this fabric) now since I'm making the pink skirt....not that I need an excuse to buy some fabric. So, I'll see what I can find and try again hopefully before summer's over. Well I guess I'd better get working on the skirt.

Ya, I'm Sewing!!

I'm finally sewing...I cut out a few things this weekend before running out to a family gathering. This quick & easy top was fun to put together , it's a silkie from JoAnn Fabrics that I bought last year, using Simplicity #2594. I hope to make a couple more of these this Summer. Actually in this picture it's not hemmed yet but that's all I need to do to finish it. Ya!!
Also on my cutting table ready to be sewn are this top Butterick 5138 using this material (chiffon to be lined in a solid pink poly)and the skirt from this New Look pattern#6609 (view C also lined). using this fabric which I think is a micro fiber,
So, we'll see how far I can get on these this weekend. I think it's time to take a few days off for some me time so I can sew. The weekends are so busy and the time goes so fast. So I feel a much needed sewing vacation coming very soon.

Trip to NYC

I made a quick trip to New York for a one night stay-over last week. I was taking a girlfriend to NY for a sightseeing tour. We had a really good time but you must know that my mind was on fabric stores. I didn't get to go to as many as I wanted to but I did get to stop at Mood Fabrics and got just one piece of fabric...can you believe that. I got this piece of fabric,
a silk chiffon, also I asked for a large bag just to have something with the Mood name on it and they gave me this canvas bag. Other than that we hit all the main sights, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island and tour bus rides. We walked & walked & walked, my girlfriend wore me OUT! We had a couple silly girl moments
so it was all good. Most of my trips to NY has been to visit family (in-laws, etc) and had not gotten to do the city tour thing in quite a few years so it was fun. Now that I'm back I hope to get some sewing done this weekend, so....more to come.

My 2nd Blogoversary!

I started this blog two years ago today (my blogoversary counter didn't work right, so I just got rid of it). At that time I never thought I'd last six months. Lo & behold I've made it two years. What an awesome experience it has been! Over the past two years I've met, shared, learned, been encouraged by and have admired many wonderful sewers and crafters of various kinds. I have not accomplished all that I've wanted to but this milestone encourages me to set some challenges for myself. I need to SWAP more, work on developing a few TNT's still (one of my wayward goals for last year), get better & faster on altering patterns and fitting. I also want to stretch my imagination and creative muscles more. My hope is to sew at least 90% of my wardrobe so these goals will help me reach this ultimate goal of sewing most of my wardrobe. Thanks for all of your inspiration, encouragement and kind words over these two years. I look forward to continuing to grow with you all.

Moving On...

I've been working on pant muslins so long I think I'm stuck. I'm just going to move it right along. I don't have a perfect fit yet but I want to get some other stuff done. I think I'll go from my last attempt and just fit as I go to get them as close as possible for now. Here are a couple pictures of my latest attempt.

I've tried all the fitting suggestions from my fitting books and other sewers but it's not working...what am I doing wrong?!? Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Not giving up but I'm moving on for now.

Frustration Behind The Scenes

OK, I've been working on getting a good fitting pair of pants made. I have used so much fabric, I made at lease 6 or more muslins. What's a girl to do, I have an odd shape and it has made fitting quite a challenge for me lately especially where pants are concerned. At least I have lots of fabric to practice on so it's not a waste as long as I'm learning. I often buy fabric as practice fabric with no real intention of a wearable item in mind. I am determined that this year my sewing concentration is getting better fit, no matter the type of garment I'm making. If it doesn't fit well...what's the use in sewing in the first place right? OK, so I'm venting some frustration but I'm not giving up. When I get this fit thing down pat...or at least get relatively good at it I'll be able to turn out more garments with a feeling of real satisfaction. I hope to post a pictures later this week. So, send your good vibes and thoughts my way as I continue on this quest.

My Mojo is working...

I finished an outfit from this New Look (6735) pattern. This is really a nice simple pattern but I did run into some problems with the band around the neck, because I had to enlarge it across the back a little.So, I fixed it by running a center seam down the back tapering it toward the bottom, then splitting open the top part of the neckline and tacking it down. What a goof-up but it turned out OK. I forgot to take a picture of the back after I finished but it looks virtually unnoticeable.
Here a picture of the finished outfit. I see lots of twin sets in my future from this pattern.Up Next...I'm trying to get a really good fitting pair of pants. So today I spent the day cutting out about three different muslins. I'm not even getting close to what I want. No pictures on that adventure yet but I'll be taking pictures and posting on my next attempt. Cross your fingers with me. I don't want to burn out my Mojo on making these pants, I've got far too much I need to make...Spring is coming and I'll need plenty of Mojo for Spring & Summer sewing. More later...

That's what I get...

Since I complained this is what happened...
I'll never complain over 4-6" of snow again, LOL! I live in a townhouse so I'm waiting for the plowers & shoveler so come along before I even attempt to dig my car out. I was actually without power for a few hours, I woke up to no electricity this morning. Thankfully around 2pm the power came back on, it was beginning to get cold inside. Thank God! So now I can get in my sewing room and get something done. To all of those in this snow storm path, stay warm & safe.

Projects Done!...

I'm finally done with my projects from the last post, the pictures are before finishing. I wanted to take pictures in the garments but I didn't finish everything I needed to get done today in time to set up the camera and have good lighting. I'll take pictures wearing them later and post them.
I defiantly had a change in plans as I began to work with the patterns and fabric. Here's what I ended up doing...I used this pattern, Burda 7580 for the cardigan and this pattern, Butterick 5247 for the top, and I winged it on the skirt to come up with this outfit (nothing hemmed yet in this pic) On the cowl neck to this top I cut it to fit around the neckline but I flared it out toward the outer edge and instead of doubling if over itself I left it single layer. I wanted the collar a little fuller and didn't want it doubled over, I really like how the collar turned out.Then I used this pattern, McCall's 5978
for these vests,As I worked on these I decided to eliminate the sleeves because the fit was better over the top with the dolman sleeves. Also they look really nice with a black turtle neck top and pants or skirt. In fact I wore the paisley vest to work Thurs. with black pants & top.
Last but not least I made this tunic,from this pattern, Butterick 5100
This looks great with black top and pants.

We had snow today, it was supposed to be 2-4" but I know I was shoveling more like 6-8"...I just want it to stop snowing!

Next I guess I need to do some planning for Spring sewing, I'm usually so behind that I barely get things done in time to where it for the season the garment is for. So maybe this will be a good time to get started. Oh, the other thing I'll be working on is getting a good fitting pair of pants. I need pants so bad and I really need to work on fit so that's what I'll get busy on next.

Upcoming Projects

Finally I hope to start on some sewing projects. It's been a while but this weekend will be a long one so I can do some sewing. There is so much I need wardrobe wise and this year I am determined to discover some TNT patterns as well as really nail a good fitting pair of pants.
Here are the items I want to start on first:
I like this gray double knit for this Burda pattern, I'm making both the dress & long cardigan.
These two are also knit fabrics: they will be one of the following cardigans

They will also go with the gray knit dress and I have enough of that gray to make a skirt. Oh, I also plan to make a black knit skirt & top to mix & match with the above cardigans. I also have some of this red & black knit left to make maybe a skirt from one and a vest from the other to add to the black mix & match. These will help my wardrobe a lot. I wear lots of black and I love red and the gray will give me some different options. So, l hope to check back soon with some progress. In the mean time I will also pick out a couple pant patterns to work on getting that perfect pair of pants to become my pant TNT. Until then...

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and I wish you all a very Happy New Year! I've been MIA for quite some time. Though I haven't been sewing or blogging lately I have been enjoying peeking in on all your blogs. At least that has kept me dreaming and looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. This year has not been the best of times, it's been very hard in fact. However I am trying to move forward and making plans for some sewing project very soon. I'll post pictures of my upcoming project soon.

It's been awhile...

It's been a while since my last post and very difficult lately but first of all let me say Thank You to all of you for your kind words, condolences and prayers for myself and my family. We are hanging in there and trying to move ahead. It takes time to get through the loss of a loved one but we are finding that God's Grace is sufficient. We will cherish our fond memories and my brother will always remain in our hearts.

I haven't been able to sew lately though I think about if often, however it's been really nice to browse your blogs and see the beautiful creations that every one's been making. I will be getting back on the wagon very soon. I'm trying to get my sewing room organized, and begin some plans for getting something done. I really need some new fall clothes so, hopefully my next post will have some pictures of my upcoming plans & projects.

My saddest day...

Monday morning Aug. 10th I lost my dear baby brother, John T. Brooks. We were very, very close. He was much more than a brother to me, because our mother died when he was only 14/yrs old so I helped to raise him. As life's journey continued he accomplished much. He worked hard, played hard, lived with more love & passion than anyone I know. He loved his family and friends, everyone that knew him no matter how long instantly knew they found a friend indeed. He was a loving husband, father of two beautiful daughters and three lovely little grand daughters and a friend to many all over this world. He finished two Master's degrees and was called to ministry. He lived for God and taught others to know Christ. He represented Christ well and I know he is now reunited with our mom & dad and just awaiting the rest of us to get there one day. It will be a grand reunion. Until then there will always be a irreplaceable hole in my heart. I'll always love you my dear brother...RIP.

BRITT Tops finally done...

Finally I finished the tops yesterday, from the "Britt" magazine This is the magazine that Christy @ "Sew Much Fabric, Sew Little Time" sent me, I wrote about it a couple posts back. They were fun to make and the pattern didn't need lots of alterations as I usually have to do. There was a slight mishap with the black, white & yellow blouse just as I was completing it. When I was doing the final press along the hem I had a "brain fart" and put the tip of the hot iron directly on the hem and melted the fabric...Can you believe this, I just wanted to scream! I felt like thumping myself in the head. Well to save the blouse I decided to just turn the hem up again and restitch it. That worked out OK, but of course it shortened the blouse more that I really wanted to, but it was better than loosing the blouse. Don't you just hate when something really dumb happens just as you are almost finished? I would have shown me wearing them but I was to lazy to set up the tripod, maybe I'll post pictures wearing them later.

I need to make a couple summer dresses so maybe that will be my next sewing quest.

YA! I'm sewing...

I'm getting some sewing done today, YA! I feel like I've been revived. I'm working on a fitting/muslin for the blouse from the BRITT magazine Christy sent me. I wasn't sure how I'd like it but I'm really liking the fit, with just a few little fixes. I didn't have to make any major alterations. That's a real pleasure. Really the only thing that really bugged me was the pattern piece that they showed for the neckband...

This was to be cut x2 on the bias. I sewed this band on and took it off twice, that just didn't work, this fabric was too stiff and the stretch of the bias just wasn't enough for the neckline to lay smooth & flat. So I made facing pieces for the neckline...these worked much better,also the front darts will be sewn all the way to the hem. The material I used for this fitting/practice garment is a rather stiff broadcloth of some sort. It will look much better in the fabrics I'm using...The white, black & yellow is a polyester silkie from JoAnn Fabrics, the green, black & white is a semi-sheer crinkle fabric from G-Street Fabrics, the $2.97 table. I think this blouse will look nice in these fabrics, great for Summer.

BTW- many sewing bloggers have been showing notions that they enjoy using, here is what I use to cut out these patterns that are traced and need a seam allowance added...

This is an Olfa Rotary Cutter with an adjustable width arm screwed on. It's perfect since you can just put the arm where you want the seam allowance to be. No double tracing needed. This is among my favorite notions. I did a search to see it they still made them but I wasn't able to find one, but if you find one it's worth getting. I have the double tracing wheel also but this is my first preference.

MOJO In The Mail...

Lately I'd been so caught up with family, personal and work issues that I was totally distracted from sewing. I seriously needed a jump start of some sewing Mojo from somewhere. So, while browsing my favorite blogs I came across Christy's post at "Sew Much Fabric, Sew Little Time" about her new found treasure... the "BRITT" magazine. This magazine is similar to Burda, it shows photos of the styles featured in the magazine and has an insert pattern sheet to trace the pattern from. The instructions are in several foreign languages and includes English. It looked so interesting and I liked the styles shown so I just had to inquire of Christy where to find it online. I was having a heck of a time searching on my own. Christy shared the information on how to get the magazine and then a day or so later she informed me that she actually received a second one from the publisher, since they didn't want it back, she offered to send me the extra copy. It was so sweet of Christy to offer and of course I was more than delighted to have to opportunity to check it out. Within just a few days there it was in my mailbox, instant MOJO in the mail. It was like getting a refreshing drink of water in the desert. So, THANK-YOU Christy, it was so nice of you to send me the BRITT magazine and share your MOJO with me. Hopefully by this weekend I'll have one of the blouse patterns traced and ready to make up a muslin and will have some pictures to share.

A little BEHIND...

Not that behind...LOL! I've gotten a little behind in my sewing, blogging, housework etc, etc. The last few weeks have be full of ups and downs amongst family, friends, work & travel etc. Fortunately it hasn't all been bad. I tell you life happens and you just have to deal with it. So, hopefully this weekend will be the most normal weekend I've had in a few weeks. I hope to get caught up on all of the above. When I don't get to sew or do the things I enjoy most I still read my favorite blogs and that gives me hope and inspiration for a better day. I thank you all for that inspiration when life seem to overwhelm me. That's why I'm so glad to be connected to all of you through blogging. Keep doing what you do! I could probably go on and on but this tunic will not be a pleasure to wear and here's why.

The fabric is linen...I love linen but I hate wearing it,Unless it is constructed in such a way to avoid the awful wrinkling. I gave my lovely tunic a nice crisp press and it looked wonderful...
until I wore it for a little whileActually only a few minutes and it began to look like I slept in it. Well, being in such a hurry to sew it I didn't think through the things I should have done to make it more wearable. I should have used a light knit interfacing on the whole tunic. I also could have done a FBA to make it fit a little better across my boobs. Yeah, always need to do that, how did I not this time. One solace to this whole thing is I didn't actually pick out this fabric and purchase it, it came from an order I placed from FabricMart.com , sometimes they run a special, with a purchase of a certain amount they'll give you a mystery bundle of fabric at no cost. This was in that mystery bundle from a purchase. When I saw it I knew right away what I wanted to make with it..but so much for that.

OK, so I have moved on to this jacket,(short version w/cuffs) I wanted to make pants also but don't have quite enough fabric left, so I'll make a skirt instead. Thankfully it's turning out quite well so far...Thank Goodness! Whew! I don't know what I would do with another wadder so close to the last one. I'll take pictures of the completed outfit soon.

Meanwhile, I did sew with some friends today, just a quick thing we decided to do. A mother and daughter that are learning to sew together. I think that is so great and wanted to help the daughter get her dress done and hopefully wear at least once before it gets too warm, here's her completed dress, the so popular Butterick 5247 I'm so proud of her accomplishment.

Looking toward Spring

It seems that it will never really come but I know spring is just around the corner. Some days are warm and sunny and the next you have put on your winter coat. Oh well, at least we can sew as if it's spring and maybe, just maybe before we know it...it will be SPRING. So, this week I was able to sew, and this is what I've been working on: Vogue 8500

This fabric is linen and it is fully lined except for the sleeves ,

The pattern didn't call for interfacing anywhere but I should have known to put a light weight interfacing in the front along the neckline and where it wraps over. It stretched a little and could have used some reinforcement. The only thing left to do is sew on the right button. Of all the buttons I have I don't have ONE perfect black button. So, when I get that button I'll have to take a picture wearing it with black pants.

Next up, is this jacket (short view) and pants outfit: Butterick 6473, I think it is now Out of Print. The fabric has a slightly loose weave and I'm not sure of the content.

I plan to make a top out of this fabric, the color here isn't very good, the dots are a little darker than they appear, they're more of a tan. I'm still deciding on the pattern I'll use for the top.BTW- I plan on sewing up a couple of those TNT patterns I mentioned in an earlier post, I've been working on the necessary alterations and will be working on a couple of those patterns for Spring as well. Hopefully I'll be posting pictures of my finished projects soon.

I DID IT! My 1st Blogoversary

YA! I actually did it, in the beginning I didn't think I'd last even the first year. But, fortunately this blogging thing is addicting. As I started this blog I was also jumping back into the sewing game after being away from sewing for a while. It's been a great year, some accomplishments, some discouragements, but it's a learning process and that's great. So, even though I haven't sewn nearly as much as I'd have liked, I'm learning & relearning things and I think about sewing more than you can imagine. In fact it seems that some of you have an extra endowment of that famous "sewing mojo" if anyone has any extra or want to share some of yours please send some my way. Sometimes I feel as many of you do I wish there were more hours in the day to devote to honing my skills. I've been so inspired by all the gifted & talented sewers and crafters out there in blog land and the wonderful connections I've made over this past year. I also found some of my local sewing friends on Facebook so we've connected. Now that I've done it I'm glad I did, it's nice to catch up with some friends that I had lost contact with. What a weekend!

I didn't get a stitch of sewing done, but what a weekend I had. Considering just a little over a week ago my back was bothering me and I couldn't do much of anything. Well this weekend made up for my down time. A group of my family & friends decided to go "snow tubing" (I didn't get the greatest pictures, hope to to post some better ones when my brother sends me his.) It was about 13 of us including the children. We had such a good time, I think the grown-up had more fun than the children. We went up to "Round Top Mountain" ski lodge in Pennsylvania. The irony is that Monday of last week a snow storm hit the east coast/mid-Atlantic region and here in the DC area we had our fair share of the fluffy white stuff. However by Thursday of the week the snow was just about gone, by Friday it was warming up significantly and by Saturday it was 70 degrees. On the mountain it was only slightly cooler, so we had the best of both worlds...snow to play on without being overly burdened with too many clothes, I was almost sweating (it don't take much for me, I have a private Summer in the dead of Winter sometimes). People were skiing, snow boarding & snow tubing with just jeans & sweaters on We spent two hours sliding down the hill screaming and laughing all the way, the most fun is when we all linked together and went down together (13 us linked together) what a blast! It's funny how I can do some nutty things (at least for me) and not bother my back but other time do almost nothing and next thing I know my back it out. My back didn't hurt a bit from our adventure but my shoulders are a bit sore I guess from dragging that tube around, but I'll soon be over that and next weekend back to sewing. I hoping to start cutting out a couple of the patterns I've been working on altering. I will soon discover what my TNT picks will be. More on that soon.

Slowly making progress...

Well I've been working on my potential TNT's patterns for the past few days. It seems like it's taking for ever. Several of the patterns had never been used before and those that had been used had to be altered. So, I've been trimming some & tracing others preparing them for alterations. I've made a muslin on this one, so it's good to go now with a real fabric. Thanks to the FBA I've had to make, my patterns look pretty butchered up...this is the full bust alteration,this is the jacket pattern, I also did the alteration for the top, I can see getting a lot of use out of this pattern,So, I need to make a muslin on these to see how I did. Here's a neat jacket pattern & accompanying idea book I ordered from Nancy's Notions (Nancy ran a special on this combo but they are usually sold separately)
I didn't include this in my potential TNT list because I ordered it and had not received it when I was pulling the others together. I think this one will make a great TNT jacket pattern. So I traced it and it's now ready for alteration. With these jackets underway I'll work on a couple skirts, they will be a lot easier. Also I want to get a couple pant pattens done to see if I can come up with a great fitting pair of pants. It's slow going but I'm making some progress. I won't be making anything else for Winter. At the rate only Spring & Summer sewing is on my mind. Funny thing my fabric stash consists mostly of Winter weight fabrics especially for jackets, so I will have to seek out a few pieces of fabric for Spring & Summer sewing. I'll be firing up my machine soon and hope to have something to share soon.

I was feeling kinda blue yesterday. I really wanted to work on some of my pattern alterations but I'd been having problems with my back lately and it felt pretty bad yesterday. So, standing at my cutting table was not an option for a few days in the past couple weeks. Since I couldn't really sew since I didn't have anything cut out & ready to work on I decided to browsed my favorite blogs to see what was happening with my online sewing friends. When I came to Faye's blog it caught my eye. She made some very pretty pattern weights out of large washers and pretty color ribbons. I thought what a great cheery idea and I instantly wanted a set for myself. Later in the day my back felt a little better and since I live pretty close to a hardware store & craft store I decided to go out. I was able to quickly find the washers and then went to the craft store and found some pretty ribbon on clearance. I almost began to have a little bounce in my step (almost). I got back home and in no time I had my very own set of pattern weights. Here's a pictorial of how they were made. I used fabric glue instead of hot glue, I think they both work fine, also I used two washers wrapped together on a few just for a little extra weight. You'll need ribbon about 28-30" inches long -by- 5/8 to 1" inch wide & just wrap to cover.Fold over and glue end to the back,
So easy and what a way to add some cheer to your sewing space. THANKS FAYE! I had to email Faye and thank her for brightening my day and it kept my day from being a total loss craft wise.

Potential TNT's

These are the patterns from my stash I've chosen that I think have potential for good wardrobe basics. Some but not all are OOP (Out of Print). I've chosen a mix of jackets, skirts, pants, tops and dresses to be used in both woven and knit fabrics and will work for all seasons. Some will be keepers and some won't make it. So, my next steps are to get these patterns altered & fitted, make up some muslins and sew, sew, sew. This weekend will be a great time to get started, hopefully I can at least knock out two-three of them for starters.

A little knitting

I almost forgot to post about the "scarf" I knitted. It's just a practice piece and I'm not sure it actually classifies as a scarf , I really didn't want it very long since I only wanted it to go around my neck and tuck into the top of my coat. I didn't want it flying in the wind and I don't need any extra padding anywhere on this body, especially in front, LOL! Here's a picture;

For some reason it didn't photograph well. I decided to join a knitting "Meet-up" to get some tips, pointers and inspiration from other knitters in my area. They meet every Monday night at a Starbucks, I won't make every meeting but will go when I can. Everyone is friendly and very helpful. It's a low key group, I look forward to learning more about knitting. Next, I'm going to knit a couple dish clothes just to get a feel for some different stitches and I've got to work on getting a good even tension in my stitches. So, I'll post those whenever I get them done, so more to come.
UPDATE: I was able to take a picture that shows a little better detail.
(All in learning how to use the setting on a camera, LOL!)

Next Up, TNT's...

TNT's... in addition to working on my projects already selected from my post "Sewing Plans for the new year". I will work on selecting patterns from my stash that I can use as TNT's (Tried -n-True), this idea was from Carolyn over at Diary of a sewing fanatic. She is a master of creative use of TNT's. She challenged others to TNT with her. My selection of TNT's will consist of, pants, skirt, jacket, a knit & woven top/blouse and a basic dress. One of the first reasons for having a set of TNT's is once you've adjusted the fit of your patterns you can more quickly put together different components of your wardrobe. They can be used from one season to another and various fabric options, trims and treatments. Of course you don't have to be limited only to TNT's, however creativity can grow using TNT's. However by using a variety of patterns there are challenges to conquer and things to learn so no way will I be limited to my TNT selection. My main goal using TNT's is to build my wardrobe and learn fitting techniques and expand my imagination using creative applications. So, I'll post later on the patterns I've chosen for potential TNT's.

Moving Right Along...

Today I was able to finish a couple things from previous posts. First of all I finished my other hat;I lined the inside just like the last one;I also made the tunic from the red & black knit out of McCall's #6107(Out of Print), as shown in a previous post; This looks nice with straight legged pants or leggins. Though my body is not belt friendly it looks nice with a belt.

I'm not usually a hat wearer but since going to the short hair cut I decided I needed a hat for the cold weather we've been having. So, here what I came up with;The base the hat is a heavy double sided fleece, I covered it with a "poodle" type soft curly fabric and lined it with a heavy weight tricot. Here another view;
here's a couple views of the inside;This will be another one, this is a smooth nap leopard print faux fur;
I'll probably finish it by the weekend so I can get on to some other sewing. I think I'll finally get to make up my McCall's 6107 red & black turtle neck tunic (bottom of post). Then move on to bigger and better things.

My plan for today was to sew as I watched the Inauguration...
But, what had happen was---
As soon as I got up this morning I was frozen to the TV screen. I started watching before the Obama's left the Blair House and I just couldn't take my eyes off the TV, I did n0t want to miss a single moment. The Obama's on their way to church.
What a proud day. I cried, grinned, reflected on the past and daydreamed about the future. This is truly a day of new beginning for us here in "AMERICA" and the world. They are the most positive image for our children, adults, families, young people with dreams to accomplish. Inspiration for every race and nationality, no matter the age, the strength of a nation starts from the top...

Sewing Plans for the New Year

I didn't have a firm wardrobe plan last year and my sewing was sort of helter-skelter. So, rather than review & reflect on the projects from the past year, I want to make firm plans for my wardrobe for this year. There's also specific things I'd like to work on conquering this year or at least get a better grip on. I want to get better at making alterations and learn new techniques that I've never tried before but have been wanting to do. I also want to incorporate some knitted and crochet projects in my plans this year.

These are among the reference books I'll use to learn better fitting techniques...

Also for brushing up on my sewing and learning better construction techniques I'll use the following books,

One of the things I want to do more of is documenting as I sew. I'm not used to doing that in as much detail as I've seen others do, but it's really good to look back on. So I will attempt to document more of what I've learned and share with others to learn from. So, that will also be something I will try to do better.

Now, the following pattern & fabric selections are amoung some the items I'll start with. I'm going use one of these two patterns with the following knit fabric. The fabric is slightly nubby and medium/slightly heavy weight. I think I might give the (Simplicity 7799 OOP) pattern another try, (I really like this pattern) if you remember from an earlier post (below) I tried altering the pattern and sewed up a muslin and it ended up as a wadder. So, if I do the Simplicity I have to practice once again with fitting the pattern. Practice makes perfect right? If I go with the (Butterick 5247) it will be a breeze. I leaning more toward the Simplicity pattern though. You'll see what I decide soon.I've had this blouse pattern (Vogue 7838 OOP) in my stash for quite a while and I think I'll make one of each of these silky/poly fabric.

This pattern (McCall's 6107 OOP) has also been in my stash for a while. The medium weight knit fabrics below will be great as these tunics. The check fabric to the left and the hounds tooth on the right I'll make the turtle neck & cuffs black. I will also make a black tunic & skirt and these will interchange great together.

There are tons more things I want to get started on but this will keep me busy for now and I'd love to get these done while the weather it still cold. Of course any of this is subject to change without notice...Ha! Thought I'd add a little disclaimer just in case I get the urge to flow a different way.

Ah Ha! Gotcha...well I decided to let it all hang out for the New Year! I'd been wanting to do this for quite some time. I decided for the new year I would just do it. I uncovered & cut my hair and I'm starting from scratch...all natural ta boot. I don't really know why it took so long to decide, I've worn it short before years ago but never with the (salt) that's taking over. I guess that the salt & pepper look is what I've fought for so long, but decided WHAT THE HECK! It feels remarkably freeing even though I'm trying to get used to it, but it is what it is LOL.BTW- My sister-in-law was my biggest inspiration in my coming out. She did it last year, so she was the pioneer for a few people. Thanks Carla! Love You!

Getting Organized for the New Year

Fabric Organizing: I love "Threads" magazine, I just received the Feb/March 2009 issue today.It's always full of great techniques, tip and inspiration. This month it has a great organizing tip for your fabric stash. The tip was submitted by a Threads reader...J. Watson, from Indiana, pg 18. You would use a three-ring binder... and clear sheet protectors from an office supply store. The web site OrganizedHome.com has the free downloadable title sheet for the binder and the insert for the binder spine as well as the 8 1/2" x 11" inventory pages that contain enough space to record three fabrics, including source, yardage, width, fabric content & additional notes. I've been looking for a way to keep track of my fabric stash, so I'm trying to decide if this will be the one I use. It will probably take me at least a year to get this stash inventoried...

This represents only a portion of my stash and I'd love to get a handle on it. While going through the fabric it will be a good time to clean out and maybe give away whatever I know I won't use.

Pattern Organizing: I actually organize my patterns in a similar way now. When I purchase a new pattern I separate the pattern envelope, pattern tissue and the instructions. The pattern tissue and instructions go in a poly bag from Nancy's Notions (I only buy these on sale), then you store your patterns in a clear plastic tote buy number order (regardless of brand). The pattern envelope goes in a sheet protector then store in a three ring binder by pattern category. So, when you are ready to select a pattern to sew or you just want to browse your pattern inventory for inspiration you just look through your binderI got this tip from someone on PatternReview.com a few years ago. It took a while to get my pattern stash in order(there's still a few I need to work on) but I try to keep it up by doing this now as I purchase patterns. I like that I don't have to dig through tons of patterns before finding what I want. It's just like looking through a pattern catalog in the store then going to the drawer to get it.

It would be interesting to hear how you organize your fabric, patterns, yarn etc. So, share your favorite way to stay organized. I'm always up for new tip, especially keeping things where I can find them easily.

Sliver Spring Sewing Meet-up

I've been meaning to post about the sewing meet-up I started a few months ago. Silver Spring Sewing Meet-up. I'd been away from sewing for quite a few years and wanted some sewing friends to help be get motivated to sew. So, I happened upon this "Meet-up" website and decided to use it to meet some sewing friends. This is a wonderful group of ladies that range from beginning to intermediate sewers. We meet once per month and have loads of fun. A couple of us help teach the beginners and everyone shares what they know and we all learn together. Here's a few pictures from a couple of our meet-ups

On average about 8-10 people participate per meeting and we meet in a meeting room at a local library. It's a great way to meet new friends. I look forward to seeing how we all grow together in the coming year. Later I'll post pictures of some of the completed projects.

Skirt finally finished!

Pattern Description: McCall's 5523 Straight skirt, mid-knee length, side zipper and faced waistline. Several lower back variations, shaped flounces, pleats, gathers.

Pattern Sizing:Regular Misses/Miss Petite (4-12) & (12-18)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? YES

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, very easy...except for one snag when I was putting in the invisible zipper . Some how when I thought I was finished and tried to turn the skirt right side out it was so twisted so I had to rip out one side of the zipper and do it over, that was NUTS!. I love using invisible zippers and I'd never done that before but this is how it ended up.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the straight front and the various details on the lower back I love skirts without waistbands, so I especially liked that this skirt has the faced waistline. Though the skirt is straight it's not extremely fitted like a pencil skirt. The back detail give plenty room for movement. Excuse the bunch up of my top, it's actually a little too long for a skirt so, I'd pulled it up a bit to make sure the back detail showed. It's actually more suited for wearing over pants or leggins.

Fabric Used: Not really sure of the fabric content, I'm assuming Polyester blend.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: Yes, I had to make the skirt my size, the highest size is 18 and I'm a 20/22. I forgot to take pictures of the alterations but, I basically added to the side seams and the front panel. I'm short waisted and round in the tummy, so the waist is about size 20, around the tummy I'm a 22, then back to 20 at the hips. Gotta get rid of the gut!

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I think I might sew this one again. There's several variations on the lower back so I'm thinking of doing the pleated version.

Conclusion: It was an easy skirt to make (except for the snag I ran into with the zipper) and a nice style for most figures (in my opinion) so I'm not sure why they limited the size to an 18. I like that it's straight in the front with the flirty flounce surprise in the back, to me that adds a nice touch.

While I was at it I made this tunic/top since the fabric went so well with my skirt.
Pattern Description: Butterick: 5247, Semi-fitted, pullover tops/tunics, mid-knee dresses with cowl-like collar, short or long dolman sleeves and self belt.

Pattern Sizing: Misses-Plus (8-14) & (16-24)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Very, very easy. Really nice for beginners.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? How quick and easy it was to cut and sew up. No fussy fitting alterations necessary.

Fabric Used: Poly knit.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: One addition I did, I wasn't able to get the full length of the sleeve on the fabric I used so I decided to simply add a band to make the sleeve the length I wanted, I made it a 3/4 length sleeve

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, I'll sew this one again and again. Nice to wear with leggins or pants or make as a dress & it can be dressed up or down. Nice flexible addition to any wardrobe.

Conclusion: Quick and easy to sew up, lots of flexiblity.

What better way to spend my Birthday!
I finally got some time to sew. I don't think I could have spent my birthday any better way than to finally get some sewing in. Life happens and seem like there has been so much going on, cutting in on my sewing time. So, I spent time working on my next project an OOP pattern (Simplicity 7799), I'm making the two-piece skirt & top in a purple knit as a practice muslin. I made this many years ago (probably 25 yrs) but it is the kind of pattern that's timeless. I actually plan to make a couple, one in this fabric and one in all black mid-weight knit. Since it's been so many year since I've made it I had some altering to do on it. Boy, what a difference a few years make. For me alterations are a challenge but I really want to work on getting a good fit with everything I make...or it's pointless right? It may turn out to be wearable, I'll post pictures soon and we'll see how this turns out.

Here's my update....Help!
Good thing I wasn't particularly fond of this fabric, this project is not going as expected, it's turned out way, way too big and the re-sizing during construction is just not working. This is the back piece.This is the sleeve & front piece.

It turned out that I don't need it as large as expected. So much for taking careful measurements. The pattern is size 18 and I need a 22 on top and 20 on the bottom. I've never altered a top with the raglan sleeves before so I'll need to practice that. Anyone with advice would sure be appreciated. So, I've decided I'm going to start from scratch with another muslin. I love this pattern and don't want to give up on it just yet.
