However, I've recently retired...Yay! So I'm trying to get my sewing grove back. I'm planning on spending more time in my sewing room and will be post more blogs and videos of my projects again.

I also decided to get a new sewing machine, kind of a retirement gift to myself. I got the Janome Continental M7 machine:

It's a really heavy duty machine that I believe will handle anything I throw at it. I really like it a lot and will do a post with more detail about it as well.

I've also got back into another hobby (Cross-stitching). Years ago I did a little bit of cross-stitching and I've been meaning to get back into it, so I did and I'll do another post sharing what I got and the projects I'm working on cross-stitching projects. The nice thing about cross-stitching is, there's no machinery needed. You can do it while traveling, watching TV or just relaxing.

I'll be back with more soon, bye for now!

Happy Sewing!!
Omegahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13827393706314408940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8823313570031016893.post-87383111322111054102023-08-17T20:57:00.011-04:002023-12-11T17:00:08.914-05:00Got your fabric, now a few tips on what to do next.So here's a couple tips for you when you bring home a wonderful fabric haul.
Before you put away your fabric haul into your stash or lay out that cute little pattern you're so excited about, and especially before you cut into that fabric, there's a couple very important steps you want to take first. I serge the raw edge of my fabric whether it's woven or knit then I pre-wash my fabrics. For the woven fabric it keeps the raw edges from fraying and it's an indicator that the fabric has been prewashed when I add it to my stash. Another reason it's really important is you don't want to sew up a cute little project and after you launder it the first time it shrinks and you can never wear it again. Pre-washing gets rid of the chemicals & sizing in the fabric sometimes used during manufacturing. The true texture and drape of the fabric is also more pronounced after pre-washing, then you get the true feel of the fabric. Next step is to pick your pattern, cut out your project and start sewing. Hope this helps any beginner sewists out there as pre-washing is a very important first step. Enjoy!
One of the requirements while looking for my home was to have space for crafting and sewing. I thought about a combined room but as it turned out I have a craft room and sewing room like I did back in Maryland. So, I've finally gotten my sewing and craft rooms together and ready for creating. It felt like forever pulling it all together, the movers had boxes stuffed all the way back to the door. The sewing room is smaller than I had in Maryland but it has turned out to be just right. I really like it, it's cozy but plenty of room to create to my hearts desire. Heres' a little tour of my craft and sewing spaces.

A few years back I started a sewing thimble collection. It all started when my dear youngest brother who is now deceased bought me two thimbles back from a trip he and his wife took to Israel. The two thimbles (circled below) started my collection and they mean more to me now than ever. Just knowing that my brother was thinking of me and my love of sewing when he saw them, makes them so precious to me.
You all probably didn't know that I moved from Maryland to South Carolina back in September 2016. I shared that adventure on my YouTube channel but since I wasn't sewing at the time I didn't share that adventure here. Since moving here I've been in an apartment and my sewing room set-up is a little bit cramped....but better than nothing. So, here's the video....Enjoy!
Instead I've been dragging my little wagon behind me.....BUT!.....now I'M BACK! Please leave a comment below if you're there, I would love to reconnect. A lot has happened in this span of time, I moved from one state to another, life's ups and downs,. I don't even know if there anyone out there still checking in but I hope so. My sewing mojo is working so I'm working on a plan and hope to get my groove back.

I did do a little sewing this summer, here's one top I made...
and still have a little more to do. It's a job that sometimes I'm tempted to bypass but have learned better down through the years. BUT, to top it off I just found out my dryer just gave up the ghost, I think the heating element just went out. I'm so glad I did my regular laundry first.
So, here what I'm planning for fall so far...

This is another stack that I pre-washed this weekend. The grey and black on the bottom will be a cardigan and I think I can get a skirt out of it too. The red & black are the same weave design just one is really small and the other a bit larger. So the larger design red & black pieces will be a cardigan and the piece with the smaller design a skirt and cardigan. The green & black is a light weight knit and will be perfect for a wrap dress.

Well let's see if I can make some of my dreams come true. I hope to get back in my sewing room at least by next weekend and make it happen...at lease some of IT.
I've had problems getting the pictures taken because of my camera remote, then I was dealing with lighting. So I decided to give it a try in my kitchen and finally got these pictures. I feel like I've found my way back to my happy sewing place. So, I did get a little sewing in last weekend, but boy am I slow, I've got to get up to speed. I worked on this top but I cut the top little too large, especially around the neckline and shoulders.

So I made adjustments to how large it was in general but I won't mess with the shoulders and neckline. Here's the top on me...but the picture above is more true to the color.

This was a practice run and I 'll know better next time. I will wear it for weekend wear. Another thing I'm not to fond of is that big square (with the little squares) hitting right on my left boob...I really don't need that there...LOL! The pants (from my last post) came out just fine, so at least I accomplished something. I've found my sewing MOJO...now to hang on to it. So, I'll be back with more later.
Today I spent some time in my sewing room. There has been so much going on work wise and other wise...mostly good but just busy. It's truly been far too long and I've been missing it, but just didn't have the MOJO. I hope I still have readers out there, I've been so neglectful but will be sewing more regular now. Well, it took a little de-cluttering, reorganizing and straightening. I had a few things left cut and ready to sew, only thing is I had to make a decision if I wanted to sew them all. A couple of the items went in the trash, believe me it's worth it to start over sometime especially on these items. However, back to what I did finish. So, I had a pair of pants that I drafted using "Sure-fit Designs" kit by Glenda Sparling Here's a picture of the pants I finished today. I got her kit a long time ago and made a pair of pants quite a while ago so I knew it would be worth it to finish these.

I'll show a picture of me with them on when I make a top to go with them. I used the rest of the day to do some testing doing a video while I sew, hopefully I'll have some videos coming up soon, I've still got to get that down at least so you can tell what I'm doing on the video. I also took some time to plan what I wanted to spend time working on for the rest of this long weekend. So, I hope to be back with more soon and see if I can stay on the wagon this time.

Hope you all have a great remainder of the weekend doing what ever you love.
However, lately I've strayed from sewing and ventured in exploring other forms of crafting. But, I've been trying to get my sewing MOJO back, I actually miss sewing but have lacked the oomph I've needed to get back at it. So, I made an SOS call to one of my sewing friends who has inspired me to get back into the game and I also joined a sewing Meet-Up to get my juices flowing again, (I'll tell you more about that later). So, tomorrow is Saturday and I will be spending some time in my sewing room getting my self organized and get started on some of my unfinished projects from months ago. So stay tuned I'll have pictures & maybe a video to share soon.
My heart really goes out to New Jersey & New York I pray for a quick recovery from this disaster. I've talked to a few friends & family along the coast and over all everyone is safe, some without power but safe. Yes, I still here alive and well, the Washington, DC area got hit but nothing like the east coast.
I know it seems that I've deserted my blog but I haven't really, I actually been missing the connections, (I know it's my fault). However lately I just haven't had a bit of sewing Mojo. Where it went I
don't know. There is a light at the end of this tunnel though, thanks
to talking with a wonderful friend who reached out and due to the recent
storm Sandy we touched base tonight just to see how each other was
doing. My friend Alethia at Kassmin's Creations
have sparked a bit of motivation in me. I've actually been doing other
crafts lately and she encouraged me to post about it here, so I will.
I've been doing paper crafting and loving it. Somehow it's been so
relaxing and easier to share with my non-sewing friends. Here's just a
peek at what I've been up to other than sewing...
So, back to sewing, I recently bought over $100 worth of fabric thinking it would spark my mojo but it didn't. The spark I needed was that little chat with Alethia, some laughs and knowing that all is well was just the kick I needed. Thanks for the kick Alethia!! LOL!

I have been sooooo MIA lately on the sewing scene. I have lost my sewing MOJO somewhere and desperately looking for it. I've been trying to catch up with everyone's sewing blogs and I'm getting some sparks of sewing energy so, I hope I can get that MOJO workin' soon. Maybe I can plan to get some things done during the long weekend of MLK this month and President's day next month. In the mean time I'll be dropping by your blogs for some much needed inspiration!!
The sleeves are a little shorter than planned but it still looks good. I don't know what happen but they came out really uneven (front piece to back piece). So, I just evened them up making them shorter. Since the fabric is chiffon I wanted to line it without changing the nice drape the fabric has so I lined it with black chiffon which worked out really great.

Chiffon isn't the easiest fabric to work with but I think it all worked out. All I have left to do is hem the bottom and the sleeves and add the buttons.

Next I need to get back to getting some pants done amongst other things. I have a jean style jacket already cut out in a stretch cotton zebra print. Do you see a theme here, LOL! Yes, I like animal print and haven't used any in awhile but have come across these that I really like so I'm going for it. More later...
It's a long story spanning almost the whole month of Sept. and a few days of Oct. firing one handy man and hiring another....see long story just read between the lines. At last I think it's done, however I won't know for sure until it rains again, but I feel better about the second set of repairmen. We'll see, in fact it's due to rain this week and I truly hope it is in fact DONE.

In the mean time I'm getting into my sewing room this week and hopefully next weekend and get some stuff done. Here is what I was working on before the roof repair fiasco. I'm making View-A which is the yellow version. I really love this animal print I've had in my stash. It's a chiffon so I'm going to line it with a black chiffon just to add a little weight and strength. So I hope to get it done by this weekend.

The access to my attic is through my sewing room closet so everything in my sewing room is covered up and pushed to the side until everything is done. What a drag, I thought about pulling my sewing machine out and using it on the dining room table but naah...that won't work for me. This top is what I'm working on from the stuff I cut out back in July. I'd love to get this finished to wear before it turns cold.
BTW - my son loved the card I sent him for his birthday. He was so excited that I made it. It's nice to have someone understand and appreciate when you put your time & care into making something for them. Since he is an artist he loves it that I'm into crafts.

So, until I'm back in the sewing room that all for now.
Yes, I've had a couple distractions with my new hobby (card making), I'm still learning and it's tons of fun. I did a little sewing this past week however not much. I've been dealing with some minor home damage due to hurricane Irene...thanks a lot Irene. My roof is in process of repair but fortunately there wasn't really major damage. I'm hoping to get back to my top and other...many other sewing projects I need to finish and start. So, I hope everyone is safe.
