Frustration Behind The Scenes

OK, I've been working on getting a good fitting pair of pants made. I have used so much fabric, I made at lease 6 or more muslins. What's a girl to do, I have an odd shape and it has made fitting quite a challenge for me lately especially where pants are concerned. At least I have lots of fabric to practice on so it's not a waste as long as I'm learning. I often buy fabric as practice fabric with no real intention of a wearable item in mind. I am determined that this year my sewing concentration is getting better fit, no matter the type of garment I'm making. If it doesn't fit well...what's the use in sewing in the first place right? OK, so I'm venting some frustration but I'm not giving up. When I get this fit thing down pat...or at least get relatively good at it I'll be able to turn out more garments with a feeling of real satisfaction. I hope to post a pictures later this week. So, send your good vibes and thoughts my way as I continue on this quest.

  1. You persistence and determination will have you wearing great pants. I will admit I have fears in working up pants. I've made 3 pairs in the past, but they weren't tailored pants, like I get from the Loft. My plan this year is to make pants.

Thanks for the lovely compliment on my dress.

    Keep on stitching.

  3. I know exactly what you mean. I used at least 10-12 yds of fabrics while I was working on my jacket. I made at 7 different muslins before I got the fit. The mistake I made was that I used a different fabric each time and each fabric behaved differently. Finally, I have a jacket that fits pretty good. As for pant don't give up.

  5. I totally understand your frustration. I have made probably 35 pants muslins, and still am completely confused by some patterns! Good luck, and I know you will be successful!

  6. Hey Lady,
Trust me I understand your frustration. I made my first pair of fitted pants on last month. I actually cheated a bit and deconstructed a pair of RTW well-fitted pants and used them to make changes to my pattern. I did that and in 3 muslins got the fit down. Check out my blog post here http://tenthousandsewinghours.blogspot.com/2010/02/jalie-2909-pic-heavy.html. It took me 2 weeks and I did a TON of research on it. To fit pants you have to understand how your front and back crotch are shaped and the space in between. I even posted some VERY helpful books. Start staring at the shape the crotch curves and lengths of your favorite pants and look at your pattern. If you do it long enough you'll begin seeing the differences. I plan on always using my crotch curve and shape from my fave pants to help correct all future pants. I wish you the BEST!!!!

  8. Thanks ladies for all the great vibes you're sending my way. I'm not giving up by any means. Just had to whine & vent a little LOL. Believe it or not I don't have a single pair of RTW pants that I consider a good fit...thus my quest. I have all the fitting books but have to keep reading and trying until I get what I'm looking for. Hopefully I can post some pictures this weekend and maybe get some suggestions from some of you. Til then thanks again for all the good vibes!!

  10. It WILL pay off! I need to do more muslins as a practice run... I have a lot of extra fabric in my stash for exactly that purpose these days.
    You can do it!

  11. Hi Omega,
I shared the same vent some months ago. But, I haven't given up. I put the pants aside that I was working on so I could regroup. In the meantime, I received some really positive feedback as well. If you haven't already done so, check out my personal blog called, "Just Venting" . I hope it helps, too.
